Practicing The Faith Challenge

Class,

I hope everyones weekend was great.  As discussed on Saturday, Judgment will come for all of us.  So what do we do in the mean time?  As believers we are called to do good towards others and draw others to Christ.  We do that by using our gifts and talents to Glorify God and share the good news of Jesus Christ through our words and deeds.  We also looked at www.iamsecond.com. I encourage everyone to go to this site and explore all the incredible testimonies of folks just like you.

I am attaching an extra sheet this week. It contains some incredible scriptures that we did not cover on Saturday.  As always The Word of The Week is attached. This will be the last lesson of this series, so please take a look.

Please make plans to attend this weekend.  We will be having our Chistmas Celebration!

Have a wonderful week and slow down enough to enjoy this season.

Brian

Thank you for praying for Misty Bounds this week. Her father passed away peacefully on Tuesday, and the funeral is tomorrow. Despite her painful loss, she is grateful that he told her he did come to believe in our Savior! It has been an especially difficult time as Phil's ailing grandfather died last week. Consequently, they attended his funeral the same day Misty made funeral arrangements for her father. Please continue to pray for Misty, her family and their understanding of how gracious Jesus is.
Blessings,

Christmas Party

Joyful Christmas Greetings, Everyone!

Our ABF Christmas Party is in 2 weeks, Dec. 13th during ABF. It will be a birthday party, and our theme is, "Because God gave us the greatest gift of all, we give to others." We will begin with heavy appetizers during our lesson followed by birthday cake with the children at 8:30. We can give to others by participating with our families in 2 ministries our church has organized. First, select an angel from 1 of 3 Christmas Trees located throughout the church - Discovery Center, the nursery foyer and at the top of the slide on level 2 of the children's building. Drop-off instructions are on the back of the cards. Second, the Food of the Month is any type of beans, dried or canned. These can be dropped off at the Discovery Center. Both of these service projects are wonderful ways to help others while modeling the gift of giving to our children.
We are celebrating until 9:15 in our ABF room so both the children and members who may be serving during the ABF hour can all come to the party! A sign-up sheet for appetizers and desserts will be available Saturday in class. We have simplified the menu to lesson stress and keep the focus on Christ.
In Christ's love,
Natalie

Staying Alert in the Last Days

To All,

How was that Thanksgiving? Do you feel guilty for all that you ate? Forget about it! You enjoyed yourself and that is all that matters. Those that could not make it Saturday, I surely understand; but you were missed. John taught us how to honor God with our money. What good timing with the Holiday upon us. I challenge everyone to buy one less present or two and find someone that could use the help. The church is providing many opportunitues this season. Just pick one.

Now on to a real light topic... Staying Alert in the Last Days. Spend time each day this week as we get close to the end of our series. I hope everyone can make it to class as we celebrate this holiday season and dig into God's word.

Be Blessed this Week,

Brian

Using Money Wisely

Good morning, everyone. From the number of smiling red faces in the class, I think we all had a good time discussing improving our home relationships. Brian's questions and activities certainly made it fun to discuss. I mean, how often do you get to discuss romance with your spouse while using crayons? (That is a rhetorical question.) This week, we will continue our discussion on our faith. As you can probably tell, we have been moving in a direction that deals with the practical application of our faith in our community and home. This week, we will discuss the wise use of money. Please work through the attached Word for the Week and come prepared to participate in another great discussion. Have a great week and see you Saturday.

Improving Your Home

ABF Family,

Well we did it. Another great discussion.  A discussion about a very highly charged topic, the sanctity of life.  From conception to old age, life is valuable despite what society might say.  We are all made in God's image and he has a plan for each and every one of us.  We as Christians must stand up for life!  Be a part of the solution.

So on to this weeks topic, Improving Your Home.  A much lighter topic, but no less important.  Get into the word of the week and lets discuss how we are going to improve our homes.

Have a wonderfully blessed week,

Brian

Dale's Mom: Surgery went great; Recovery is in need of a prayer

Hey guys,
I just wanted to send an update on Dale's Mom. Her hip surgery went well yesterday. It has gone far more smoothly than her surgery on the other hip last year. Thank you so very much for the prayers. We could definitely feel them there with us (and with Mary and the doctors).
Dale visited her today and found out she is needing more blood as her hip is still bleeding from the surgery. The doctors seem ok with this and not worried at this point. But we would like to modify her prayer request: please pray for her recovery and for a control on the bleeding.
Dale and I are truly blessed to be part of such a great class. We cannot thank you enough.
Sincerely,
Leah
Guys - Please see the information below about the men's retreat at Sabine Creek. Let's get another good group from the Young ABF together for this one. I promise I'll try not to snore everyone out of the cabin this year. I may even bring a bulk set of industrial-strength earplugs.

John

RE: Prayer

Hello ABF!
I was talking to my taxi driver about his faith. He gave a copy of the Holy Koran. This was an interesting conversation to say the least.
Also, here is a photo of downtown Birmingham, England. It is 5:45 PM here.
Cheers!

Appreciating Life

ABF Family,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  What beautiful weather!  I am sure your family got out and took advantage of it.  Thank you for the great discussion on Christian Community.  John Elliott brought good perspective on what they have found as they grew closer with folks in the ABF.  As he said, it starts by going to church, then ABF, then Growth Group...  The experiences only get better as you function in a true Christian community.  And do not every forget our role in making desciples of others by sharing Chist's love through our words and actions.  We can influence our community, we just have to decide to do so.

Work this week on strengthening our ABF Christian community.  As I challenged, call others in the class this week just to let them know you are thinking about them.  Stay in the Word and I look forward to our discussion this Saturday.

Re: Urgent Prayer Request

Hey all,

I just wanted to send out an encouragement for support for the Murphy's.  Mike has been without a job for a while and has tried to work hard to get his bills paid with whatever he could get his hands on.  He now has a chance to get back on his feet with this new position.  However, it takes money to make money.  He has not come to the class before now because he did not know where his first job would be or in what time frame he would have to get there.  He did not expect it to be the day after his paperwork was completed.  I know this is sudden but if any of you feel compelled to give towards his new start, he needs to have enough money to get him through next friday.  He has hotel stays, gas and food at a minimum.  He is supposed to leave today for his trip so even the smallest amount would help.  In a case like this, even $20 means a lot.   You can reach mike by phone at 214-868-5510.  I'm sure they would be overwhelmed by the effort to meet them on such a short notice.

Sincerely
David Prda

WOW this Thursday!

Hi Ladies,
Children's huddle is on our WOW Wednesday, so we've moved WOW to this Thursday, November 6!  I hope this allows some of you who cannot make Wednesday's to come join us for fellowship!  Last month we had a great dinner together, so we're doing it again this month.  This time we'll meet at Chili's in Rockwall at 7pm.  Please come and hang out with the girls of the ABF.  What a great opportunity to get to know each other better and enjoy each other's complany!  I can't wait to see you there!

Please reply to this e-mail and let me know if you are coming so I can reserve a large enough table! :)

Also, I'd like to encourage you to register for the Mom's conference.  It's Saturday, November 15, 9am-3pm.  Vicki Courtney, a well-known "mother/daughter" author, is the featured speaker.  Plus, there are a variety of topic specific break-out sessions.  The cost is only $25 and includes lunch from Celebrity Bakery.  I'll be there...I hope you will be, too!  You can register online at www.lakepointe.org.

See you Thursday! :)

Urgent Prayer Request

ABF Family,
Mike has just talked to Joe and he is asking for prayer. He has gotten the job, however needs to be in El Paso tomorrow. In order to get there, he needs to get insurance and then register his truck. He also has to pay his way there which means gas and food. He is going to be there for a week and a half and is very stressed by all of this. Finances, health, leaving family behind. Pray for his peace. Pray that if God is wanting this job for him that provisions will be made. He was not able to get all the medical testing done today either. Please keep Shana and the kids in your prayers as well. Thanks so much.
Sincerely,
Theresa Cruz

Connecting in Community and more

Family,

Another week and the beginning of November. Where has the year gone? Thank you to John for such a great lesson last Saturday. I due believe I sensed a hint of passion in his voice on the topic of Holiness. We should all have that passion for our own holiness. We must remember who made us and the power of the HOLY SPIRIT that lives in side of every believer. Use IT! I have attached a good way to see how you are doing from last weeks lesson. Play with the exercise and be intentional about your personal holiness.

Now on to this week. I will teach on Connection in Community. Come prepared to share what God says to you this week.

IN HIM,

Brian

PRAYER UPDATE

ABF Family-
Great news...Mike Murphy got the job today and will go in on Monday to fill out paper work.  It is only three hours away allowing him to come home each weekend.  If he goes beyond five hours away, his new boss said he would pay for him to come home every other weekend.  Mike's doctor visit gave no answers at this time, his levels are high, the doctor is running more blood test and he will have a sonogram on Monday.  Please continue to keep him in your prayers.
Thanks so much.  See you tomorrow night.

Word for the Week

Good morning, everyone. I hope the remainder of the weekend was relaxing and restful. Brian did a great job condensing two lessons into one class. As with every topic we've covered this fall, if you have questions or lingering curiosity about any part of the discussion, feel free to contact Brian or me. We can discuss the topic further with you or point you to resources so you can do your own research and investigation.

This week, we will look at the meaning of a set apart life. What does it mean for us to pursue holiness and be holy? Attached is the Word for the Week to help you prepare for class. I'm looking forward to a great discussion with everyone.

Have a great week!

John

Humanity of Christ

ABF Family,

A great big thank you to John for his lessons over the past few weeks. It is such a joy for me to have the opportunity to sit, listen and learn. Admittedly as John spoke on Saturday, I was already thinking of ideas for this weeks lesson, Identifying with the Humanity of Jesus.

This topic promises to be an awesome one to discuss. I look forward to what God is going to reveal to me as I prepare. I ask everyone to prepare and listen as well. Do not forget to be a 7-5-2 family. Pray, Pray, Pray. We can never pray enough. Have those conversations with God and remember prayer is not all about you talking. Listen! He has a lot to say.

Be Blessed this week and Bless others as well,

Brian

Follow-up on Depravity lesson and Interpreting the Incarnation

I apologize for not covering all of the lesson Sat. night, but the additional discussion about the care account was just as important and vital to the mission of our ABF. As promised, attached are some additional notes. This is essentially my outline from class. I hope it makes sense. I want to reiterate what I said at the beginning of the lesson. I know this topic creates all types of questions and philosophical issues that we just don't have time to cover in detail during our class time. I will make myself available to meet with anyone that wants to discuss their questions on this topic or any other topic we are covering in this Contending for the Faith series. ***Note from Editor, contact John for phone numbers***

Now, on to next week. Attached is the Word for the Week. We will look at and discuss how God Himself existed among humankind in the person of Jesus Christ. I look forward to a great discussion and fellowship with you.

Have a fantastic 7-5-2 week with God and your family.

John

Re: Fall festival

Hi guys,

We discussed in ABF class tonight the upcoming Fall Festival. It will be Friday, October 24th, 5:00 - 9:30.

We decided to sponsor a ticket entrance booth this year. This year you can sign up on line for a volunteer spot at mysignup.com/abfticket. Please go and look on the website under the Young ABF slot. You can sign up for a slot that is available. PLEASE KEEP IT TO ONLY 3 PEOPLE PER TIME SLOT. If you signed up in class I added you to the list already. If you have to cancel you may also do so through the website, so that the slot is free for someone else to sign up in that time slot. Our class undo code is monkey (don't ask).

Also remember if you volunteer you get 2 tickets to the festival. You can bring bagged candy to donate to the festival starting next week. There will be bins located around the church building. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail or call.

Thanks,
Jenn Tolbert

Re: prayer request

Hi Guys
I want to thank you for your prayers. Mike is not in so much pain. His rheumatoid arthritis doc increased his meds & pain meds. Mike will call in a week to find out the results of the lab work they are doing. Most of the meds that he is taking takes time a (4-6 months) to show any signs of working. we aren't there yet so it's hard for Mike to keep taking the meds when you still feel like you did before taking anything. We went to regular doc yesterday because of some abdominal pain and he goes in for a CT scan Monday (9-29) at 7:30. He wants to check to make sure that nothing is getting overlooked because of everything else going on. Please be praying for the scan to show everything clearly and the doctors & everyone to be able to see exactly what is there. Thanks ahead for your prayers.

Have a blessed day!Shana Murphy

Prayer Request Update

Dear ABF Family-
In regards to the prayer request for Sharron who was having leg issues, she did have to have her lower leg amputated yesterday. The doctor said that if they waited one more day that she would have lost her whole leg. She is in good spirits as she has had such trouble with her foot and leg over the years do to diabetes. She knows that this will be a whole new process to get used to but also knows that it could have been so much worse. Thank you for your prayers and please continue to keep her and Terry in your prayers as they go throughout the next few weeks.
Sincerely,Theresa Cruz

Prayer request

ABF family:

Please pray for the Murphys today. Since Saturday night, Mike has been in severe abdominal and other pain. His prescription painkillers have not eased any of his discomfort. They talked to Mike's doctor's office about the pain and he is going in today to see the doctor. It is likely that Mike may be sent to a pain management specialist. Please pray that God, our Healer and Comfort, will be glorified today.
John

Dealing with Depravity and Support material for last Saturday

ABF Family,

What an awesome class on Saturday night. As you could tell myself and others were quite passionate about the topic, Living the Truth. God's truth is the truth, period. Many will come that try to distort this fact and as we learned, they will answer to God for this. As Barry put so well, if others dont accept the truth shame on them. If we dont know that truth as belilevers, shame on us. We are not expected to convince anyone that Christ is the way but we are comanded to know His word and tell others.

Let me caution you, do not allow guilt in your heart or mind if you do not have the answers that people ask about our saviour. Just make this a motivator to know Him more. Spend time in the Word and meditate over what it says. God will reveal the meaning. Live your life daily as the truth tells you and read the truth so you can share the good news.

As promised, I have attached some of materials that I failed to bring to class. I searched blueletterbible.com so I could compare the Truth tothe false religions that are out there. I hit the topics of Jesus, Bible and Salvation. Read and begin to understand the lies and distortion of the truth that are out there. Pray for these lost people that they would come to know the Truth.

Live in the Truth,
Brian

I'm back!  Well, I made it through my 20th High School Reunion.  I know for most that is a shock. You though I was 30.  Dee and I had a great time; however, missed seeing every one in class.  I am sure that Jill conveyed God's word in a wonderful way as she always does.

Well on to the week ahead.  Are you a 7-5-2 family?  If you heard Steve preach and saw the craziness around the church before and after services you know what I am talking about.  We are all being encourage to transform our lives along with those around us by praying more than ever before.  Pray 7 times a week for your family, pray 5 times a week with your family and 2 times a week with your spouse.  I dont know about ya'll but prayer is the most powerful thing for Christians.  We will talk more on Saturday day about this topic; however, in the mean time Let's Pray.

Take time this week to prepare for our discussion on "Living for the Truth."  Have a blessed week and I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday night.

Word for the Week

Good morning, everyone.  I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated everyone's participation in our discussion Saturday night.  I recognize the challenge presented in trying to cover topics like the Trinity and Creation in the short time we have in class.  It is very difficult to fully cover all of the issues and questions that a discussion on these topics can raise.  I would like to follow-up on one issue we discussed.  While I believe that the Bible is not a science textbook and that a discussion of the creation events is best fitted for the realm of faith and not science, I also believe that the Bible is not anti-science.  True, the Bible does not use scientific language as we know and understand it today and it explains events that science cannot repeat or test, but just because it is non-scientific, does not mean it is anti-science.  That is an important distinction we should all understand.  If anyone has any lingering questions or discussion points on either issue (Trinity or Creation), please feel free to call me (972-439-8219) or email me (jtolbert@winstead.com).  I still have a lot to learn on both topics and am happy to take that journey with you.

This week, Jill Sledge will lead us in a discussion on believing in and relying on the Bible as God's Word.  I know God will bless Jill's preparation this week and she will present God's revelation to us as His Spirit inspires her heart.  Please take time to pray for Jill and to prepare your own hearts by working through the Word for the Week.

We are truly blessed to be a part of this fellowship.  May God use you for His glory this week.

John

While believing in the Trinity has a direct correlation with our beliefs on salvation through the sacrifice of Christ, we should not get too frustrated by our inability to comprehend how God is Three and One at the same time. God is divine in nature. He was not created by man, therefore, his nature cannot be fully comprehended by man. We can, however, trust and believe in the Trinity as it is revealed to us in Scripture and through His work in our lives, even though we don't fully comprehend it. Live with the hope that He will fully reveal Himself to us and we will have a full understanding of Him when we live with Him in Heaven for eternity. This week, we will look at comprehending creation. Attached is the Word for the Week. Please work through it and let's have another great discussion this week in class.
Also, please be in prayer about how God might use you and your family to minister to the Murphys during this time. If you have any questions about how you can help or need some ideas about their needs, please feel free to contact me or Brian at any time.
Have a blessed week and we'll see you on Saturday!
John

Praises & Prayers Followup

Dear ABF Friends,
I want to first thank you for your prayers. I requested prayers on Sat. night for my friend Kele Giles whose six month old daughter was having open heart surgery today. Well once again God listen and answered in a major way. I got to spend the day at the hospital with them, and let me tell you God was everywhere. I could feel him, and I know they could as well. Presley started her day off with a temp. of 100, and in the attempts to bring it down it dropped to 94, which also effected her blood pressure and other things. Her surgery was nearly canceled, but they were able to get her stable and at 8:15 this a.m. she was wheeled away from Kele and Mike. It took some time to get her all hooked up to everything she would need to be on for surgery and at 10a.m. her surgery began.
Mikes eyes looked as if he had been crying for days, and Kele seemed so tired and weak. My heart just broke for them, and I must say I felt sort of guilty (but very thankful) that I have healthy kids. The surgery took a little over four hours, but all went well. The surgeon came out and told them that everything went well. They will still take one day at a time for now, but hopes are that within the next two to three weeks they will finally be able to bring there sweet baby home for the first time. Please continue to pray for this sweet family, and thanks again.
Sincerely,
Theresa Cruz

Note From Brian

ABF Family,

Ok, I hope no one left ABF saying, “Wow Brian sure laid the We are at War on thick.” Well ok I hope it did spark discussion. We need to hear the truth and the truth is we are fighting a battle of eternal proportion. We are the soldiers and God is our Commander and Chief. He knows all, sees all and can do all. With that, we can not lose this war, but we need to fight. God gives us the tools, we just need to use them. Can you tell I am a little fired up about this topic? I desire to spend the next few months focused on Contending our Faith. Know why we believe what we believe.

Please begin this week looking at the Word of the Week and prepare yourself. This is assured to be a time of learning and stretching our faith.

I am truly blessed to have every one of you as family in Christ.

Brian

Contending for the Faith

ABF Family,
What a special time for sharing on Saturday. Members of the Russia mission team, including Melanie and David Prda, shared their experiences in Russia last month. As expected God moved hearts of the Russian people through members of our ABF and others from LP. One of the best things was to hear about marriages that have been attacked and torn apart by satan finally mending and working with God's help. Many thanks were given for the support that we showed for this team before and during the trip.
Well we have studied, IN HIS Name all summer and now on to the "Ultimate Faith Challenge." the focus will be studying,"Knowing what and why you believe." It promises to a good study of the Word and your understanding of the Christian faith. I look forward to sharing the next few months leading up to Christmas as we go through this series.
Have a wonderful week and dont forget it is promotion weekend for our kiddos.

Re: Bridegroom

Good News and Encouragement

I guess that is how to describe our latest trip to Russia. Remember Natasha from the first year of the conference? Her and her husband are doing much better and even looked happy this year. Remember Julia, Melanie’s translator with marriage problems? She has made a firm decision to stay and work things out with her husband. Remember our goal for last year? We needed to find a couple to continue to shepherd the group beyond the conference….done! We now have Dimitri and Dianna, a strong young couple that have weathered many storms already. David met them 5 years ago in another city and just this year they began attending the church in Chelny. They are very excited to continue leading the group fellowship.

I do however have some sad news. Genya, a 25year old mother of 3 came to the conference alone. Her husband is in a band and he was on tour. Upon his return(2 days after the conference) they would be discussing divorce. Genya said she came to the conference depressed, desperate and without hope. We were able to talk and pray with her and at the conclusion of the conference, she shared that she had renewed hope and had been very encouraged from the conference.

I know it might be strange to pray for, or have real compassion for someone you have never met. But I am sure each of us knows someone going through a similar situation. As we remember them in our prayers, please remember Genya also.

I Peter 5:8-9 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Thank you for your part on sending us to Russia, again. Your money and prayers are never in vain! May God’s blessings overflow in your life this year. * David and Melanie Prda*
